“Masculinity”—the word I have been listening to all my life. Looking back, I remember hearing this word for the first time when I told my father how I felt when my cousins made fun of me. Growing up, I remember being smaller than boys my age. My build never matched what was expected. I grew up in a body that invited comparison. Before my achievements and my name, my physique became the topic of discussion in a room full of people. It made me feel smaller than I ever wanted to be. Boys my age used to go to gym and flex their arms and triceps, whereas I stood there with my narrow shoulders and lean frame, which always seemed to invite explanations for being this way.
